One of the commonest endocrine presentations is women having irregular periods, or no periods at all. Irregular periods can come for a variety of reasons, the most common being condition called polycystic ovary syndrome. That includes three elements, firstly, the irregular periods, secondly, a tendency to have too much testosterone in the blood and therefore unwanted or excess hair, and thirdly, the finding of ovaries that look polycystic when examined on an ultrasound. One of the jobs of the endocrinologist in seeing somebody with polycystic ovary syndrome, is to make sure it's not in fact a presentation of the more unusual forms of conditions that cause irregular periods.
