Why do I feel faint when I am dizzy?
Fainting or feeling faint can be common for patients with dizziness, particularly if drops in blood pressure are a cause, says Professor Adolfo Bronstein
Transcript
Yes, that's a good question. A very common cause of dizziness is a drop in blood pressure. This is particularly the case in elderly patients, particularly if they are on anti-blood pressure medication. A patient with high blood pressure, they may receive medications to lower the blood pressure, which is a good thing. However, if when the patient stands up, for instance, first thing in the morning, they've been lying down all night, they stand up in the morning and they will feel dizzy because the blood is not fully pumped up to the brain and therefore the bits of the brain, again, controlling balance or controlling vision will feel not right, will feel not enough blood coming there. I feel a little bit faint. I feel a little bit dizzy. I better lie down. That gives the game away for the doctor. Those patients are likely to have drops in blood pressure as the main cause of the dizziness.
