When should metformin be considered for PCOS?
Mr Efstathios Theodorou advises that metformin should be considered for PCOS when other treatments, such as oral contraception with cyclic oral contraceptive pills or progestins or Mirena, have failed to help the symptoms.
Transcript
Metformin for women with polycystic ovaries should not be a first line treatment. For women that have irregular periods, oral contraception with cyclic oral contraceptive pills or progestins or Mirena should be considered first rather than Metformin. Metformin also, should not be the first line of treatment for irregular periods or anovulatory infertility. It can be considered under certain circumstances, but always if other treatments have failed or whether there's no indication for those.
