All pregnant women, their immune system, the way their body fights infection, doesn't work as well as when they're not pregnant.
And therefore you will be offered a number of vaccines both for your health but also to try and optimise the health of the baby and reduce the chance of baby having infections after the birth.
For women they'll be offered a COVID vaccine, flu vaccine, season dependent.
But you may also be offered an RSV vaccine or whooping cough vaccine.
These are primarily for the baby's benefits as although these are part of the normal immunisation programme for all children in the UK, there are some babies who are vulnerable before they are fully immunised.
And we found that by vaccinating mothers during the pregnancy, this helps protect those babies until they themselves are fully vaccinated.
