Katlin Kreamer-Tonin discusses how rehabilitation has evolved over the last 20 years and why robotics haven’t yet been implemented widely in this area of healthcare. She explains how ABLE Human Motion’s exoskeleton is addressing these obstacles and why this means it could reach more patients.

Over the past 20 years, rehabilitation has mostly stayed the same. So we're using very traditional techniques, manually moving people's legs to help them to walk again, parallel bars, just like stiff braces. And over these last years, we've seen that robotics can play a huge role in improving people's outcomes in rehabilitation. But these haven't been adopted yet widely because of a few key areas. So mostly that they're very heavy and bulky to move around. They're not clinically suitable, so they're not, they're very time consuming to set up. They're not really fitting how the sessions are structured in the clinic, and they have a very high cost. So at ABLE, we're trying to make a robot that can fulfil these unmet needs, and offer rehabilitation and robotic therapy to a much wider array of patients in a clinical setting.
