Are there any tests to diagnose dizziness and vertigo?
Vertigo tests and dizziness tests can include scans to locate abnormalities as well as a range of function tests to help reach a diagnosis, as Professor Adolfo Bronstein explains
Transcript
You can imagine vertigo can come from many different bits of the head. So, it can come from the different parts of the brain, different parts of the inner ear, or the brain connection with the inner ear, the nerves connecting the brain and the ear. So, one test that we often do is an MRI, a brain scan, a high resolution brain scan to see if we can pick up which part of the brain or the inner ear is affected, but that only tells you about the anatomy of the problem, the structure of the problem. We also have functional test, test of function. So, you have to check the hearing levels of the inner ear and the balance levels of the inner ear. For instance, with tests that reproduce to some extent the dizziness, and you can measure the physiological response. So you have tests of the anatomy, like scans, and test of the function, the physiology of the inner ear.
