What is the difference between hiatal hernia and gerd?
Dr. Sarmed Sami explains the difference between hiatal hernia and GERD. A hiatal hernia is a structural problem where part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest. This can weaken the valve between the stomach and the oesophagus. As a result, people may experience GERD.
Transcript
Hiatus hernia is technically a structural problem where part of the stomach can travel up into the chest and that can cause looseness or relaxation in the valve between the stomach and the gullet. Now, as a result of hiatus hernia, people may experience GERD, which is an acronym that stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease or acid reflux.
