What is Peyronie’s disease?

Dr Suks Minhas, a Consultant Urologist and Andrologist at London Andrology, says although the cause of Peyronie’s disease is unknown, it is characterised by scarring and bending of the penis. The disease can be treated with drug or surgical treatment.

Transcript
Peyronie's disease is a disease which is an unknown aetiology. Peyronie's disease was first described many, many years ago, in fact, first described after a French physician called François Gigot de la Peyronie in 1743, and it's characterised by scarring of the penis, a bend in the penis, and pain on erection. The treatments really do vary considerably, and treatments are quite difficult, particularly in the acute phase in the management of the patient. Particularly, patients may get pain. They may require treatments for that, but the problem is when the patient gets a curve or bend that prevents them from having intercourse, and then often patients may require surgical treatment. There is an alternative now of a drug called Xiapex, or Xiaflex, which is collagenase drug that can be used to inject the plaque, and break the plaque up, and that can be used to try and reduce the curvature, and help patients in terms of improving their quality of life.
