What is next generation sequencing?

Simon Fishel explains that next generation sequencing is a new way of sequencing technology related to genetics and molecular genetics.

Transcript
In order to look at the chromosomes in embryos, there's been different technologies over the years. In fact, Care Fertility were the first to use a technology that's being used worldwide at the moment called Array CGH, fancy name, but it's a very specific technology to looking at the chromosomes in a particular cell, a single cell of a particular embryo. And it was the first technology that allowed us to look at all the chromosomes, every single one of the 23 pairs of chromosomes. This Array CGH technology has now been modified by what we would call advanced molecular genetics. It's a technology that allows us to extract the DNA and then use new molecular genetic programmes or technologies to actually sequence parts of that DNA. And in sequencing parts of that DNA, we're getting much more refined information, much more precision information. And so it's a sequencing technology related to genetics and molecular genetics, but it's a new way of doing it. So it's next generation sequencing.
