What is an abnormal uterine shape?

Dr Nitish Narvekarexplains that the most commonabnormal uterine shapeis a uterine septum, where long septum runs through the centre of the uterus.

Transcript
Abnormal uterine shape, or Mullerian abnormalities, or uterine anomalies is a class of defects. These are embryological defects. Embryological means they are present from birth. These are not acquired by the patient. This is something that the patient or woman is born with. And a septum is the most common embryological abnormality. So, the uterus forms from two halves or two sides, left side and the right side. These meet and form a complete uterus. And the point where the two halves meet, the central partition gets resorbed or absorbed over a period of time, embryologically, when the woman is in her mother's womb. In some women, this resorption doesn't take place, and so that partition remains, and that is called a septum. It's like having a room with a partition in the middle, so you have two halves of the room as opposed to having one unified room or uterus, just to give an analogy. And this increases the risk of miscarriage significantly. And there are some women who have habitual miscarriage or recurring miscarriage as a result of septum. So, determining the shape of the uterus with a 3-D scan and mapping the depth can help us counsel women about their risk of miscarriage, especially if they have come to this important point of receiving fertility treatment, such as IVF, which is invasive, costly, and they have come to this point because they have exhausted chances of conceiving naturally. So, it is very important to diagnose and treat and manage it appropriately.
