What is a brain aneurysm and what causes them?

Dr Prem Rangi, a Consultant in Interventional and Diagnostic Neuroradiology, says aneurysms are relatively common with a 3-5% incidental prevalence rate, while the exact causes are unknown, they are found more commonly in women and in the elderly. Treatment options involve surgically clipping and endovascular coiling.

So they're relatively common in the population. We see about somewhere between three to five percent of the population have a so-called incidental aneurysm. And we don't often understand why they form, but we know they occur more commonly as one gets older, more prevalent in females as well. They're often quiescent in the population until they rupture, and they can be quite devastating events in people's lives to the extent where they're life-threatening. And there are a number of treatments. Conventionally, they're treated with surgical clipping. Or, more commonly nowadays, in the acute stage at least, they're treated with endovascular coil embolisation.
