What does low sperm motility mean?
Dr Suks Minhas, a Consultant Urologist and Andrologist at London Andrology, describes all the different factors that can cause low sperm motility such as heat damage, oxidative damage, infectious damage and presence of varicoceles.
Transcript
Low sperm motility is quite a difficult area and the motility is important obviously for the sperm to reach the egg. There are a number of factors which can cause low sperm motility and, again, some of these factors are quite controversial. Now particularly some of the areas that are important are such as varicocele, heat damage, and the oxidation products as well which can damage sperm. And overall, trying to treat motility can be difficult. One of the other areas of concern is infections and infections can cause a reduced motility as well. So, it's important to try and identify some of these factors and try and treat patients as well at the same time, so you can try and optimise their outcomes.
