What causes recurrent varicose veins?
Professor Mark Whiteley lists some of the causes of recurrent varicose veins, including doctors treating the wrong veins or using the wrong techniques, and the natural deterioration of the body.
Transcript
There's three main causes of recurrent varicose veins. The most common one is that doctors treat the wrong veins. In other words, they don't identify perforating veins or pelvic veins. Instead, they treated the wrong veins, because they've done their own quick ultrasound rather than getting a proper one by a vascular technologist. The second is they use the wrong technique. So they use stripping, or they use foam sclerotherapy, or they use an underpowered laser. The third, and the one we will never get over, which is 3% per year, is the natural deterioration of the body.
