What causes acid reflux?

Dr. Sarmed Sami lists some of the causes of acid reflux, including lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol, obesity), diet, and genetic factors, such as hiatus hernia.

Transcript
Acid is produced in the stomach, which sits just below your chest. And then when acid travels from the stomach into your food pipe or gullet, that is technically acid reflux. Now there are several reasons why people would experience acid reflux symptoms. Some of those factors or reasons could be related to lifestyles such as smoking, alcohol, being overweight, having or eating diet rich in fat, or sugar, or spicy diet. And also there are other factors such as genetics or mechanical factors, such as having a hiatus hernia, which leads to weakening of the bowels, and that can increase your risk of having acid reflux as well.
