What can I expect on the day of my cardiac procedure?
Dr Adam Hartley, Consultant cardiologist, explains what to expect on the day of a cardiac procedure in this video, covering arrival, nursing checks, consent, preparation and how the team supports patients before treatment. This offers practical, patient-friendly guidance for those considering private care.
Transcript
On the day of your procedure, you will attend the private wing at Hammersmith Hospital, where you'll be met by the reception team and the nurse will be looking after you for your stay.
You will be changed into a hospital gown.
You might have to answer some simple questions, perhaps take some medication and perhaps have an intravenous cannula put in to allow us to give medications as required.
You will often have been required to not eat or drink for a time before any procedure, but your cardiologist will be able to advise on this more accurately.
Once ready for the procedure, you'll be escorted down by the nurse who's looking after you down to the cardiac cath lab where the procedure will take place.
Following the procedure, you'll be brought back up to the private wing to monitor and check that you are recovering safely from the procedure.
Depending on what procedure you've had and what happened in the procedure, as well as other medical issues you may have, you may be able to get home the same day or be kept in overnight for further monitoring.
Again, your cardiologist will be able to advise further.
