What can I expect during an MRI scan?
Queen Square Senior Neuroradiographer Kirsty Price addresses the question of how does an MRI scan work and what to expect during an MRI scan, from being asked to lie still, to the noises and vibrations to expect while the MRI machine gets to work

So you can expect a variety of things. First of all, we'll run through everything with you. You can expect to be asked to stay still for quite a lot of the scan. The scan can be quite noisy, so you will expect to hear some strange noises and maybe some strange vibrations as well during the scan. That's all normal, that's just part of the scan working. We may also ask you to hold your breath and that enables us to get some really good accurate imaging. So you can expect a fairly long scan compared to some other imaging techniques. But rest assured that we're doing that because we're getting really, really precise pictures.
