What are the best treatment options for dizziness?
From medication and lifestyle changes, to counselling and rehabilitation, Professor Adolfo Bronstein explains some of the chronic dizziness treatment options
Transcript
Chronic dizziness can be treated with a number of approaches. The main approach is to try to really engage the patient into fighting the chronic dizziness. Some patients feel naturally very miserable with a chronic dizziness, and they succumb to it, and they lose the will to fight it. So, sometimes patients needs to be encouraged to be more positive about it, the chronic dizziness, and the doctors as well. And this means that the doctor has to set up a plan of treatment for their patient. That plan may involve a medication. For instance, some chronic dizziness is due to long-term migraine, and that needs to be treated with anti-migraine medications. Some forms of chronic dizziness are due to a degree of imbalance between the two balance organs in the inner ear, in which case rehabilitation will be the main source of treatment. In some patients, all those components have produced a degree of depression or secondary depression due to the dizziness. And one needs to explore that and treat the patient if they need some form of counselling or if they need some form of anti-depressant medication. All those components have to be evaluated in the individual patient. There is no, sort of a one-size-fits-all, but those are the general aspects. Drugs for migraines, anti-depressive drugs, rehabilitation, confidence-building exercises, and sometimes changes in lifestyle.
