What are the treatment options for balance disorders at Queen Square?
How a balance disorder is treated at Queen Square depends on the root cause, so establishing this is the first vital step, explains Professor Adolfo Bronstein
Transcript
Treatment options for balance disorders will ultimately depend on the diagnosis. So, the first phase of the encounter of the patient with a doctor will be to try to establish a diagnosis. If the patient doesn't have a brain scan, often he will get one. The patient may need a special test for the inner ear function. Once we know a diagnosis, if it is inner ear disorder, a main source of treatment is rehabilitation balance exercises, which can be coordinated by a vestibular therapist. If the problem is one more to do with a neurological problem like a sense of imbalance or dizziness in the cerebellar degeneration, we will often recruit the help of general physiotherapy. And some of those cerebellar problems can be treated with medications that can actually restore the equilibrium, the balance between the inner ear, the cerebellum, and the eye movement, because those patients may have eye movement problems that make them feel unsteady as well.
