Psychodynamic therapy is often confused with psychoanalytic therapy. Although it is a predecessor of psychoanalytic therapy it is very different from psychoanalytic therapy. Psychoanalytic therapy refers predominately to Freudian therapy but psychodynamic therapy refers to Freud or his followers afterwards. So you have a mixture of different aspects of psychodynamic therapy instead of just one approach. So it's an integrative approach to psychoanalysis using different models and different schools of therapy. And the predominant factor of psychodynamic therapy is to understand the unconscious defence mechanisms and perhaps what lies beneath our conscious mind that is stopping us moving forwards and is actually not allowing us to feel whole again as a human being.
