Migraine is a genetic disorder. The vast majority of patients who have migraine have other family members who have got migraine. In fact, we have identified over 40 genes that can lead to migraine. And in essence, it is what we call a polygenic disorder. Parents of people who have got migraine have got genes, multiple genes, and they are then passed on to the children, and then those children have those genes. And depending on how many genes they have, they become prone to migraine. But besides the genetics side of things, there's also environmental factors that can actually make you more prone to getting migraine. So things like just being under a lot of stress can make you more prone to having migraine. Drinking alcohol can make you more prone to migraine. There are some dietary factors that in some people can make you prone to migraine. Going hungry for a period of time, where your blood sugars are going up and down, can make you prone to migraine. Then there are factors such as sleep. if you sleep too much or not get enough sleep, then that can make you prone to migraine. There are other factors, such as weather changes. There are some people who have stated that, you know, just before a thunderstorm they are very prone to getting migraine. So it's partly a genetic disorder but also it's a disorder that can be driven by external factors.
