What are epididymal cysts?
Dr Suks Minhas, a Consultant Urologist and Andrologist at London Andrology, says epididymal cysts are cysts of the sperm tubes at the back of the testical and can vary from very small to very large. Surgery to remove larger cysts are generally successful but may include some side effects such as post operative pain.
Transcript
An epididymal cyst is a cyst of the epididymis or sperm tube, which is at the back of the testicle. Epididymal cysts are quite common, in fact, many men above the age of 40 will have them. They vary from very small, seeming incidental on an old term scale, which might be about a millimetre. Sometimes they can reach a much larger size, anything for up to a few centimetres. Normally you don't actually operate on them, particularly in the younger man, because if you do operate on them it will obstruct or cause a blockage in the sperm tube, and could cause fertility problems. In the older age group, in particular men who have completed a family, you can remove them, but the problem there, of course, is it can actually cause an increased amount of pain afterwards. So you have to be very careful. But generally speaking, if they reach a large size that are troublesome, then you can have surgery to remove them.
