Is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) inherited and should my family be screened?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is usually inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Dr Ravi Assomull explains why first-degree relatives should undergo screening tests such as ECG and echocardiography to identify the condition early.

Transcript
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is inherited. It's inherited in a fashion called an autosomal dominant pattern. Very simply, that means if you have it, there is a 50% chance that your first degree relatives also have it. By virtue of that, all patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy should recommend that their first degree relatives are screened with tests such as an ECG, echocardiogram and a clinical assessment.
