Is HyCoSy painful?
Dr William Hooexplains that theHyCoSyscan is not painful, but as the dye is being injected there can be cramping that can last hours; patients are advised to take painkillers an hour before the procedure.
Transcript
The scan itself is not painful, but often, women will complain that as the dye is being injected, there will be some crampy abdominal pain and which may last for a few hours after the procedure as well. And we often advise women to take some painkillers an hour before they come in. If they're not allergic to paracetamol, if they're not allergic to ibuprofen, then we would advise that they take those before they come. And most women tolerate it very well. Of course, it's done awake, and sensitivity is different for every individual, and there will be some who find the procedure more uncomfortable, in which case, we just stop, but that's on a case-by-case basis.
