How is Motor Neurone Disease diagnosed?
Motor Neurone Disease is very difficult to diagnose whilst the prognosis varies a lot because each individual is so different according to Dr Nikhil Sharma, a Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
Transcript
So motor neurone disease is a clinical diagnosis, and that's a really important part. So it's important that the diagnosis is made by somebody who has expertise in the area. There are lots of investigations that are necessary to support the diagnosis and to try to look for other conditions that can mimic it. At Queen Square, we have access to state of the art facilities, including very detailed neurophysiology, but also very in-depth neurophysiology including measures of how the brain itself works. We have advanced imaging techniques. So this allows us to look not only at the brain and at the spine, but we've also developed methods now to actually look at the muscle as well, which gives us a much broader overview.
