How is IVF treatment advancing in terms of better success rates for patients?

Simon Fishel explains that the success of IVF is improving all the time, as evidenced by the statistics and live birth rates over time.

Transcript
Fortunately, the technologies generally that we introduce over time does improve success rates. We know, for example, when the UK regulator started auditing data and published their first results in 1991, the live birth rate was 14%. Today the national average is 28%, so we have dramatically improved the opportunities for patients. And when you add to that the consideration that what we see today is increasing difficulties and technological challenges for many couples, and yet we're still getting live birth rates much higher than in 1991, it suggests that we are doing something better than what we were doing originally. We're improving all the time. And when we look at, for example, the overall results of [inaudible] fertility, which is much higher than the national average for birth rates, we know that our approach, our particular approach is achieving outcomes probably as good as you can get anywhere and better than most. And so I think it's very important for us to maintain this drive, to introduce technologies, to improve the way we undertake IVF, to maximise the chance of live birth rates. And if we see this incremental growth year on year of increasing live birth rates, we know we're doing something right, and we know we're giving something back positively to patients for all the faith that they put in us.
