How does CBT work for low self esteem?
Joanna Rodriguez explains that CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) can help to boost low self-esteem by working on depression and anxiety, and addressing the underlying causes of these negative feelings.
Transcript
Cognitive-behavioural therapy for low self-esteem usually is working on depression and anxiety. So often when a person has low self-esteem what...the way that that affects them is that it makes them feel anxious and it makes them feel down. But the reason for that is because of the way that they see themselves. So, for example, somebody with low self-esteem quite commonly thinks that I'm not good enough or I'm not worthy, I'm not likeable. And so because of the way that they think about themselves that anything in their world that happens that can make them believe that that's true can make them feel down and make them feel anxious. So we would typically work on the depression and anxiety through the normal treatment protocols. But we will also look at those underlying beliefs about the way that they see themselves so that we can try and shift those as well.
