Sildenafil and tadalafil both work by increasing the blood flow into the penis, thus giving a firmer erection. Their action is not instantaneous so it's not that you'll take the tablet and you'll automatically get an erection; you would still need sexual arousal to develop that erection as you would normally. Once you've got the erection on these medications, it's not that the medication will last forever and usually, once you've had intercourse or ejaculated, it is likely to go down.
