How do hormones affect acne?

Dr Daniel Glass says fluctuating hormone levels during your menstrual cycle can cause acne flare ups and patients with this type of acne can be treated with the oral contraceptive pill.

Transcript
So, it's very common for patients to tell me that their acne varies throughout their menstrual cycle. Before you have your period, your estrone levels often drop, and your testosterone becomes a more important influence on the sebaceous glands, the grease dots in the skin. This can result in a flare of your acne before or during your menstrual period. We find, in patients who have this type of acne, that they can respond very well to the oral contraceptive pill.
