Can you talk me through the patient journey for my MRI scan if I have a cardiac pacemaker?

From arriving at reception to going through safety checklists, Dr Charlotte Manisty explains what patients with pacemakers can expect when going for an MRI scan

Transcript
The first person who will meet you will be the receptionist who will take you to go and get changed. Once you've changed, you'll meet our cardiac physiologist who will check your pacemaker or defibrillator and ensure that it's safe to go within the MRI scanning environment. They will also check that the pacemaker and defibrillator is functioning correctly and make some changes to the device to ensure that it's safe to go within the MRI environment. After that, you'll be greeted by our radiographer who will go through a safety checklist, and will take you through to the scanner and put you on to the scanner where you'll be connected to the monitoring equipment. After the scan, you'll then go and meet the physiologist again who will reprogramme your device back to the same settings as you had when you first arrived and then you'll be free to go home.
